Pet urine is not something that can simply be cleaned out of carpet, or any other absorbent material, unless it is cleaned up immediately. Urine is in a neutral state when it is deposited. This is when cleaning is easiest and most successful. Once the urine has become exposed to the air, it begins to change and become acidic. This is when the stain starts to become permanently attached to your carpet fibers. The longer it stays there, the more permanent it becomes, and it isn’t just carpet fibers that are affected.

The padding underneath your carpet as well as the concrete or wood floor lying under the padding will most likely be affected also. In some cases of minor contamination, neutralizers, enzymes, and oxidizers can be used to correct the staining and odor. In most cases, however, much more is needed. The carpet may need to be pulled up so that the padding can be removed and replaced and so that the flooring underneath can be treated or sealed. Tack strips and baseboards may also need to be sealed or replaced.

Pet Stain Detection

When the yellow pet stains are present, it’s easy to find the areas that need treatment. Sometimes, however, the staining is invisible and can only be detected with ultra-violet (UV) light. We use UV lights as well as moisture detection meters to detect pet stains on carpets. This is done to accurately identify all the areas on the carpet and floors that must be treated.

Pet Stain Treatment

In some situations, in which the urine contamination is minor, we can correct the problem with a sub-surface treatment. We can do this without having to lift your carpet. We apply enough of our specially formulated pet stain and odor treatment to reach the contamination that is in the carpet and padding. This neutralizes and loosens the urine deposits, which we then extract using a sub-surface extraction tool and extremely powerful suction from our truckmounted cleaning equipment.

In situations of more widespread contamination, we will need to lift your carpet. We then remove all padding and other materials that have been affected. The carpet is then neutralized, treated and then thoroughly cleaned. Depending on the severity of the situation, the subfloor may need to be treated and possibly sealed before new padding can be installed. Next, we replace the padding and reinstall your carpet.
